Subject: Ships transporting Volga colonists in 1760s
Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 11:15:41 -0700
If anyone has any luck in tracking down descriptions or pictures of the
ships that transported Volga colonists in the 1760s (e.g., Love & Unity,
Elephant, etc.), please post the information on this list. I'm sure
that many would be interested in this subject (I know I would).
The information about the ship's name comes from the Kuhlberg lists,
which were prepared in 1766 as the colonists were processed at
Oranienbaum. The amount of information given varies from list to list.
Some lists give the name of the ship, the type of ship (e.g., frigate,
cutter, caravel, galliot, etc.), the country of origin of the ship, the
name of the captain, and the port of departure. Other lists provide
only some of this information. Sometimes, no name is listed for the
ship.
The information in question is available from Dr. Igor Pleve. One can
ask him to provide the name of the ship or to provide a xerox copy of
the pertinent page from the Kuhlberg list. Usually, he includes the
cover page of the list, which contains the information described above.
I do not know whether Vlad Soshnikov (RAGAS) is another potential source
for this information.
Anyone who has a Kuhlberg list and is interested in having the ship
information translated, please contact me privately.
