Subject: [GV] New topic - first Volga German ships to America
Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 23:01:14 -0800
I really enjoyed our topic of the first children of Volga GRs that were
born America. Now I would like to compile a list of the first ships with
Volga GRs that came to America (including Canada). How about a list of
the first 20 ships? It would also be interesting to identify the
villages represented on the ship, if known. I guess immigration started
around 1873. After we get a list compiled I will put it on the Volga
German web site.
I will start with 2 ships I know that may be in the first 20. This
information comes from the AHSGR ship lists published in the Journal and
Clues.
November 23, 1875 (arrival date)
SS Ohio from Bremen to New York. Settling mainly in Ellis County, KS.
Mostly Catholic except the villages of Schoental and Schoenfeld.
Villages of Graf, Katharinenstadt, Herzog, Boaro, Liebenthal, Louis,
Neu-Obermonjou, Obermonjou, Kamenka, Schoental, Schoenfeld.
October 24, 1876
The SS Merion from Bremen to New York. Primarily from the Evangelical
colonies of Neu-Yagodnaya, Schoental, Schoenfeld, and Schoendorf. These
were daughter colonies of Yagodnaya Polyana and Pobochnoye. They first
settled in the area of Otis, Kansas near the border of Barton and Rush
counties. May later moved to Whitman County, WA.
