Paul Herdt, 84, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff. The closed casket visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at The Jolliffe Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb.7, at Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jim Turnbo and Reverend Richard Landrigan officiating. Private family interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery with military honors by the Admiral Dewey V.F.W. Post No. 1681. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in care of the family for a memorial to be designated at a later time. Condolences may be sent to .
He was born Dec. 12, 1918, in rural Scotts Bluff County, the son of Adam and Katherine (Herber) Herdt. He graduated from Yoder High School with the Class of 1936. He was united in marriage to Ceola Hornbacher on Aug. 31, 1939, in Scotts Bluff County. Paul enlisted in the United States Air Force on Feb. 2, 1944. He received the Victory Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Badge while serving his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant on May 26, 1946.
He returned to Scottsbluff and began his career in the construction business. He was employed by B & C Steel for 15 years and was a bus driver and janitor for the Scottsbluff Schools for 18 years. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Scottsbluff where he served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher for many years and the V.F.W. Post No. 1681 in Gering.
Paul is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ceola Herdt of Scottsbluff; son Roger (Diana) Herdt of Minnesota; daughters Barbara (Neil) Phillips of California and Carol Herdt of Scottsbluff; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters Esther (Elmer) Huck of Minatare and Ruth (Leon) Waters of Minnesota; brothers Walter (Betty) Herdt and John Herdt all of Oregon; nieces; and nephews.
His parents, sisters Mary Suppes and Eva Scholl, and brothers Dave, Reuben, Harold, and Bill preceded him in death.
