Josephine Knauf Roenitz, 90, of 521 Michigan Ave., died peacefully at her home, Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2004.
Josephine was born in Sheboygan on Oct. 19, 1914, to Dr. Edmund and Josephine Reiss Knauf. She attended St. Clement Catholic grade school and was a graduate of Sheboygan High School, Class of 1932. She continued her education at St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana, graduating in 1936.
On Oct. 12, 1937 Josephine and James G. Roenitz were united in marriage at St. Clement Catholic Church. Mr. Roenitz preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1988.
Josephine was a faithful, life-long member of St. Clement Parish. She was an active volunteer in the Sheboygan Area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Sheboygan Rehabilitation Center, and tutored in the Laubach Literacy Program. She was also a member of the Catholic Women’s Charity Club, St. Nicholas Hospital Auxiliary, and the Sheboygan Service Club.
Josephine was affectionately known as “Dodo” to those that knew and loved her. She was truly a special person. She was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many happy times with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, and being with her family at the cottage on Elkhart Lake.
Josephine is survived by her five children and their families, Josephine (Jacob) Gerend of Sheboygan and their children, Michael (Julie) Gerend of St. Paul, Minn., Ellen (Ted) Dryden of Whitefish Bay, Beth (Christopher) Gotwald of Sheboygan, Sarah Gerend of Denver, Colo. and James Gerend of Minneapolis, Minn., Katherine (Robert) Chesebro of Sheboygan and their children, Margaret Chesebro of Minneapolis, and Christopher Chesebro of Boston, Mass., Christine Roenitz and Ruth Roenitz, both of Sheboygan, Robert (Joni) Roenitz and their children, Robert and Stephen Roenitz all of Whitefish, Bay; her daughters-in-law, Barbara (Roenitz) Barrows of Elkhart Lake and her children, Katherine (Ryan) Little of West Bend, Claudia (Gordon) Montgomery of Winnetka, Ill., Laura Roenitz of Milwaukee, Jennifer (Kenneth) Brech of Rochester, Mich., and Claire Roenitz of Chicago, Ill.; Mary Ann Roenitz of Sheboygan and her children, Thomas (Michelle) Roenitz of Sheboygan, Thaddeus (Julie) Roenitz o
f Burbank, Calif., John (Jennifer) Roenitz of Sheboygan, Tanya (Charles) Schmanski of Louisville, Colo., and Joshua Roenitz of San Diego, Calif. Josephine is also survived by her 27 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, James, Josephine was preceded in death by her sons, James M. Roenitz and Thomas R. Roenitz; her brother, Edmund Knauf; her sister, Helen O’Malley; an infant daughter, Margaret; and an infant brother, John Knauf.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church by the Rev. James E. Connell and the Rev. Edward F. Monroe CSsR. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
A time of visitation and support will be held at the church on Monday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed to the memorial funds that have been established in her name for St. Clement Parish, St. Vincent de Paul Society or Girl Scouts Manitou Council.
