I would recommend taking the train between Moscow and Saratov. Take one that leaves about 6 p.m. and arrives about 6 or 7 a.m.
It is cheaper than air.
It gives you a few hours to see the countryside before you go to sleep. From the air, you get no appreciation of what Russia looks like.
Most of the time, you will be sleeping so we did not find it tedious.
It saves hotel rent.
You do get some conversation with Russians if you have an English speaking person sharing the compartment.
We did not take the highest price ticket. Ours was a four person compartment which gave us four bunk bed type accommodations at night.
I would recommend taking a lunch with you.
Get up a little early to get in the bath rooms (there are 2 in each car). If there is one for handicapped and it is not busy, its much roomier etc.
You will enjoy Russia. More so if you travel with or have friends there who speak both Russian and English.

PS Let me know if you run into any Altergotts. I am still working on my project of putting all together in one giant family tree (over 4,000 in that tree now).
