Hi Patrice:

My discovery of these records asked more questions than they answered: Are
there more, did all villages have to make such reports to the volost
government, where are they now, when did such reporting begin, etc?

I found the Josefstal ones in the Josefstal village files- in a day of no
photocopies, letters and other such documents were copied by hand...so these
are hand written copies of documents sent to the volost government..
Volgograd archives does not have the Ilavlin volost records...so where are
they? Archival guides for Volgograd and Engels have appeared, and some
inventories for the Saratov Kontor records, but nothing else to really show
us the ton of material that Saratov must have, that are mentioned from time
to time in presentations.

There are some Volost records in Volgograd: Medvedtskoe Volost,
Linevoozerskoe Volost, Oleshinskoe Volost, Neu-Galkinskoe Volost and
Romashskoe Volost. These all had Volga German vilages in them.

Then it will be a matter of going through the inventories or actual records.
I don't think any of us will live that long.

As to what villages are in what volost...I think that such data is out
there...we only need to put it together...it would make for an interesting
thread of discussion.

The Minkh encyclopedia which AHSGR has a copy of, in Russian, has histories
of most of the Volga villages, founding info, etc, as well as lists of
volost governments.

Ted,

This is quite an interesting find, particularly since you have seen them
yourself. I have been told by Pleve that he has not seen any vital records
for the Volga Germans and they were not kept. So perhaps he does not know
because they were not kept by the archives or they were very rare and he
has just not come across them.

The question that Robert asked was about a 1847 marriage. For this time
period, I am confident, from everything I have learned, that there were not
any vital records. Perhaps sometime after 1874 when Family Lists (or
Administrative Village lists or Civil Lists) were instituted, the record
keeping could have been changed or evolved over time.

Any ideas on how we might get access to some of the Volost records? I
wonder how to correlate the villages with the Volosts.
