LeRoy J. Ewald, age 90, a Manitowoc resident, died Thursday evening, Jan. 13, 2005, at Northridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 16, at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, 818 State St., Manitowoc. The Rev. Steven Olson will officiate with burial of his cremated remains later at Wildwood Cemetery, Sheboygan.

LeRoy was born Feb. 11, 1914, in Haven, son of the late Henry and Anna Schmidt Ewald. LeRoy was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving from June 13, 1941, until Nov. 26, 1945.

On Dec. 31, 1964, LeRoy was married to Esther V. Rettele Klemme at Grafton. LeRoy was employed at Schuette Construction Co. of Manitowoc and retired in 1975 from Oshkosh Asphalt Co. The couple spent their retirement years in Arizona and moved back to Manitowoc three years ago.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a 50-year member of the Operating Engineers Local #139. He received his 50-year membership plaque and gold watch in December of 2004 from his union.

Survivors include his wife, Esther, of Manitowoc; his five stepchildren, William (Janet) Klemme of Hampstead, N.H., Gail (Ron) Monka of Two Rivers, James (Eileen) Klemme of Phoenix, Ariz., David (Fran) Klemme of Sheboygan and Phillip (Julia) Klemme of Phoenix; 18 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Milton (Kaye) Ewald of Sunland, Calif. and Georgiana Ewald of Sheboygan; one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law, Hazel Wagner of Cleveland and Adrian Wagner of Cleveland; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Ewald and Leslie Ewald and two sisters, Ethel Ewald and Lila Hirschman.

Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc on Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of services at 4 p.m.
