Some of you have asked Vera to cite her sources. I would like to offer two of mine. These may not fully cover her comments but should introduce you to two good resources that can at least be a starting point for historical research, especially with respect to the relationship between Catherine and the GRs. Be sure to read them with an open mind, free and clear of previous perceptions about your history.
GR Resource:
From Catherine to Kruschev (The Story of Russia's Germans) by Adam Giesinger.
This book still contains some GR biases, especially with respect to Mennonites, but treats the relationship with Catherine quite fairly. He could be more firm about the facts and expand upon them but perhaps doesn't have the same passion about truth in this particular area as I do.
It can be purchased from AHSGR but is probably available in many public and university libraries, especially those in GR populated regions.
Non-GR Resource:
Human Capital (The Settlement of Foreigners in Russia 1762-1804) by Roger Bartlett.
For detailed info about Bartlett's credentials, go to http://www.gbrussia.org/archive.php?id=212 and do a page search for his name, slightly less than half way down.
This is obviously a totally unbiased approach to the topic and covers all foreign migration into Russia.
I think this book might be in the AHSGR library. It will be in many university libraries and should be available under inter-library loan.
