Hello All,

I am relatively new to the mailing list, I have truly enjoyed learning more by reading the posts that I have seen in the past few weeks. I am hoping some of the other people on the list will be able to help me further my research. I have no idea how to begin searching for ancestors in Russia, and would very much appreciate some guidance.

My great grandfather (Johangeorg "George" Ostwald b.20 Oct 1873 Russia d.12 Jul 1958 Tacoma, Wash.), his first wife (Marie Flaht b. abt 1873 Russia d. before 1914 in Washington), and sons (Hienrich J. b. 8 Dec 1894 Neu Hussenbach, Russia d. 29 Jan 1984 Long Beach, California; and Emanuel b. abt Aug 1902 Neu Hussenbach, Russia d. in infancy, North America) emigrated from Neu Hussenbach, Russia to Walla Walla, Wash. His 3 brothers (Heinrich "Henry" b. abt 1876; Philipp b. abt 1880; Andreas "Andrew" b. 13 Jun 1884 Russia d. Dec 1971 Walla Walla, Wash.) also emigrated from Russia to Walla Walla with thier families. After the death of my great granfather's first wife, he remarried. On the marriage certificate it states that his parents names were Henry Ostwald and Eva Elisabetha Fuchs.

Johangeorg's second wife, my great grandmother, was Marie Kathrina Gerlitz (Girletz)(b. 7 Jun 1876 Russia; d. 8 Jul 1853 Tacoma, Wash.). She emigrated from Russia to Endicott or Colfax (unsure which) Wash. with her father (Conrad Gerlitz b. abt 1838 Saratov, Russia d. before 1930 in Wash.) and her 3 children (John b.6 Sept 1902 Jagodnaya Polyanna, Russia d.29 May 1979 Tacoma, Wash.; Conrad b. abt 1907 J.P. Russia d. 12 Apr 1969 Tacoma, Wash.; Marie b. 2 Jan 1909 J.P., Russia d. 16 Sep 1988 Springfield, Oregon) while pregnant with her son (Albert b. 7 Jun 1913 d. 22 Nov 1970 Wash.). WE are unsure if her first husband (surname= Goetz) died on the ship enroute to America or if he died in Europe (either in Russia or at the port of departure).

Conrad lived out his years in Wash. with his brother Hienrich "Henry" (b. Mar 1853 Russia d. after 1930) and his wife "Katie" (b. Dec 1853 d. after 1930). Another brother Johan "John" (b. abt 1855 Russia d. ?) and his wife Anna (b. abt 1859 Russia d. ?) also lived in the Colfax/Endicott, Wash. area. Conrad's wife Elisabetha Ha???man (as stated on Marie Kathrina's marriage certificate to Johangeorg) died before he emigrated.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions on how I may expand on what I already have.

Thank you in advance,
Bonnie Schuette
