Hi Diane
You might start with the Library and National Archives Canada website. Their Canadian Genealogy Centre (www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy) has ship passenger lists from 1865 to 1935 for east coast ports. You can also send for the booklet - Tracing Your Ancestors in Canada.
The Ships List is another site that might be useful. While most lists show the port of arrival in North America, some give the name of the ship and point of embarkation from Europe. In tracing the movement of my own Volga German relatives from Europe, I had to look year by year for the names of the ships arriving at Canadian ports, and the list of passengers on each ship. It helps if you have some idea of the year they arrived.
You are probably aware the Province of Manitoba has a genealogical guide to help you research. (www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/genealogy)
Hope this helps. If I can be of any further assistance, please e-mail me direct.
P.S. My maternal grandparents (Schwin/Schween & Kuhlmann) came from Volga-German colonies of Holstein and Rosenberg (south of Saratov) in 1903 and moved to Rhein, Saskatchwean about 1918.
