Subject: [GERARD-L] William Garard of Berkeley Co. Virginia
Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 12:40:47 EST

My husband, Bob, is a descendant of William Garard of Berkeley County whose
son Isaac was mentioned in the will of Rev. John. Garard/Gerrard. William died
in 1782 before Rev. John died in 1787 and the birth of Rev. John's son born in
1786, who was named William. We think Bob's William was an older son of Rev.
John based on the fact Isaac was mentioned in his will and the family lived in
the same vicinity of Berkeley County, but there is no proof!

If you think you might be a descendant of this family, we would love to make
contact with you.

10 Nov 1998 Family Group Sheet
Husband: William Garard
Born: about 1742/1743 in:
Died: Oct 1782 in: Berkeley Co. Virginia 2
Father: Rev. John Garard
Mother: Mehetable _?_
William died intestate and tax records show that he owned 270 acres of
land. His Inventory, WB 1, p.294, dated 16 Oct 1782, lists much livestock and
personal belongings and one negro girl. The Account was written 10 May 1785 by
his wife, Executrix of the estate, and recorded 26 Dec 1796, WB 3, p.6.
In BERKELEY CO. WV ORDER BOOK 3, 1777-1779, p.403 "William Gerrard
was appointed to serve as Captain of the Militia of the county in the town of
James Buckles who had resigned." The exact date was not given but it was
sometime after 16 Mar 1779, the date James Buckles had been appointed to serve
as Captain, found in same book, page 369. William also furnished food for the
Revolutionary Army and received a certificate for such 2 Oct 1780.
William was named as the Executor in the will of his father-in-law,
Jonathan Ozburn, written 30 May 1778 and recorded 16 Mar 1779. Jonathan willed
William the tract of land on the North side of the road which included the
land he lived on. Jonathan's grandson, Jonathan Gerrard was to get 20 acres.
David Garard and Charles DeMoss were appointed the securers.
The only record found naming William's wife, Leucretia, was on the
personal property tax records of 1783, 1784, 1785. Orphan or guardian records
have not been found, so the only known children are Jonathan and Isaac. A
William Garard paid taxes on 2 horses in 1785 and 1786, Aaron Garard paid
taxes on horses in 1787 through 1790, and Mary Gerrard married Thomas Demoss
10 Apr 1797 with Jonnathan Gerrard the suretor. These three young adults do
not belong in any of the other Garard families of Berkeley Co. and it is felt
they are also children of William and Leucretia.
Wife: Leucretia Ozburn

Died: in:
Father: Jonathan Ozburn
Mother: Mary _?_
M Child 1 Jonathan Garard died at age: 39

Jonathan died intestate and left 6 orphans, listed in Orphans Bond Book 2
p.33. The Mill Creek Baptist church records show that he was received into the
church through baptisn between January and November of 1792. He first paid
personal property tax in 1785 on two horses and 2 cattle.
M Child 2 William Garard
Born: about 1769 in: Berkeley Co. Virginia 4
William paid personal property taxes in 1785 and 1786 on two horses. A
William Gerard also paid taxes in Greene County, Ohio in 1808 and it is
assumed it is this person.
M Child 3 Aaron Garard
Born: about 1771 in: Berkeley Co. Virginia 4
Aaron paid taxes in Berkeley Co. from 1787 through 1790. He also was paid an
approved amount due him from the estate of Rev. John Garard, Will Book 2, p.
M Child 4 Isaac Gerard died at age: 75
Born: 28 Mar 1775 in: Berkeley Co. Virginia 5
Died: 4 Jan 1851 in: Greene Co. Ohio 6
Cemetery: Mt. Tabor in: Greene Co. Ohio 7
Spouse: Christiana Pultz
Married: about 1796 in: Berkeley Co. Virginia ? 8
Isaac was placed as the son of Isaac and Rachel Gerard by Lindsey M.
Brien in the Gerrard Families of Southern Ohio. Additional research indicates
that Isaac is the son of William, whose son, Isaac, was named in the will of
Rev. John Gerrard.
Christiana Boltz/Pultz, the girl Isaac married, lived in Berkeley Co.
Virginia. Isaac appeared on the Berkeley Co. personal property tax records for
the years 1796, 1797, and 1798. The birth of their first child, Isaac II, was
in 1797. Census records of 1850 show the birthplace of Isaac II as Virginia.
The family probably left for Ohio sometime after the taxes were paid in March

Spouse: Thomas Demoss
