This is what I show:
1600-1648 Alsace is part of The Holy Roman Empire. Part of present day
Alsace may have been German as well. My map is not that precise that I am
looking at.
1681 France annexes Strasbourg. Parts of present day Lorraine are French
and parts are Holy Roman Empire I don't see Germany listed as a country on
the map I am looking at for this time period. I think it is part of the
Holy Roman Empire.
This continues till around the mid 1700s.
Late 1700s to early 1800s lots of fighting going on in this area. Cities
and areas are changing alliances depending upon which army is where. The
map at this time looks like a crazy quilt between France, the Swiss
Confederation, the Habsburg Empire which includes some of what is Germany,
and a dwindling Holy Roman Empire. Alsace and Lorraine are not call out on
this map per se but west of the Rhine is France. East is either Hapsburg or
Holy Roman Empire and it looks like Lorraine is divided among them. Alsace
appears to be divided among the Swiss Confederation too but as this map is a
pretty high level view and not everything is called out I am judging by
general locations indicated.
Things really get stirred up 1800-1815 Here Alsace and Lorraine are part of
a area described as dependent upon France but not as included in the country
of France. Then towards the end of that period they seem to be French.
1815-1871: more war and in 1871 Alsace-Lorraine becomes German.
1871-1914: Alsace-Lorraine is part of the German Empire
1914: WWI and this area is hit hard.
1918: Alsace-Lorraine appears to be back in French hands.
1939-1942: Back to German control
1942-1945: WWII and this area is hit hard again. Still listed as German on
the maps I am looking at.
1945: Back to France
I found several sites on the web that talk about the History of the Region:
