Hi Dianne
Supposing we put the horse before the cart ({:)))
Challenged by your mistery I looked up my "Militr Schematismus"
for the year 1880 which is nothing more than a contemporary "who was who"
in the upper ranks of the Austrian army and found that the
47th Infantry Regiment with it's headquarters located in Trient,
Italy had actually one of their Battallions the "8th Styrian Feld-Jger"
stationed in Capo d'Istria. A modern map will show the Cape of Istria
located 50 miles due south of Trieste.
Their Regimental Logistical Command was located in Triest
and was responsible for the city of Triest, Istria, Grz and Gradisca.
The regiment was founded in 1608 and had it's role to protect the southern
flank of Austria, I would suspect, for much of that time.

So it is theoretically possible that your Bohemian had served in Italy but
in the Austrian Army.( Or possibly the Austrian Navy in Triest)
and that would solve your mistery.

There is, however, one fly in this concoction, and that is the 47th IR
recruited from the district of Marburg a.d. Drau whenever it needed new
conscripts. Marburg is far away from Bohemia. The question now arises
was he a conscripted soldier or was he part of the administrative Staff
in Triest. The admin staff, I would think, was a conglomeration of
qualified staffers that could have come from any part of Austria.
A conscript would have come from the Regimental district (Marburg).

The alphabetical index of the Schematismus shows a Carl, Clemens, Franz,
Ignaz, Johann and Peter Ruzicka listed for the period 1850 - 79.

If you want to take a chance on the above you could write to the:

Kriegsarchiv
Nottendorfergasse 2
A-1030 Wien

and ask for a search. Make sure you give them as much as you know.
Their fax number is (0222) 795 40 109

Good luck. Frank
