Making Human Rights Claims in the 21st Century
An Interdisciplinary Conference sponsored by the University of Wisconsin
Joint Center for International Studies
April 28 and 29, 2000
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
This conference brings into dialogue scholars whose work explores the
making of human rights claims and the cultural politics of their
representations from a variety of disciplinary and geographic perspectives.
It will consider the articulation of global human rights norms and
networks; representations of rights claims in art, photography, television
and the Internet; and social movements and human rights.
In exploring the making of rights claims at the interstices of the global
and the local, the conference features papers from such varied contexts as
Tibet, Uganda, South Korea, Kenya, Cambodia, Guatemala, South Africa,
Canada, Japan, Chile and Bosnia, Peru and the United States. It brings
together more than 30 scholars from the arts, anthropology, history,
library science, philosophy, political science, political science,
sociology, media studies and communication.
Among the featured speakers at the conference are: Susan Moeller, Brandeis
University; Leon Golub, Painter; Stanley Cohen, London School of Economics;
David Stoll, Middlebury College; Marilyn Young, New York University;
Lindsay French, Rhode Island School of Design; Michael Green, University of
Chicago; Ara Wilson, Ohio State University; Daniel Rothenberg, University
of Michigan; Alexis Eastwood, Connecticut College; and Kenneth Cmiel,
University of Iowa.
