Hi,
The area of eastern France east of the Rhine you name was likely part of
either France or Germany so many times, it would be hard to keep track. The
people of the area were of German heritage, but were spoils of too may wars
to count. Do a Google Search of "Palatinate" and the late 1600's "War of
the Palatinate" (or "Orleans War") for information about that general time
frame. Prior to that (1618 - 1648) was the "Great War" or "Thirty Years
War," when the area was fought over because of deep political disagreements,
and religiously by Martin Luther's starting up the "Reformation." The area
was called something like Elsass Lorraine (Spelling is bad) in France.
Hope this helps!
Wayne
