The granting of arms was not necessarily a step towards ennoblement, most
families that received arms never became noble. A grant of nobility (usually the
giving of the "von") normally included a grant of arms for those families that
did not yet have them. Most, but not all, noble families carry the "von". In
the normal course of events though there were no steps between granting of
arms and ennoblement.
