Hi, Liz:
I read your message to Kittie re the purchase of land through the Land Patent
process. My gggrandfather, Gabriel KETTNER purchased land from the land
office in Elba County, AL in 1858. I have the document from the Bureau of
Land Management in Alabama. What kind of file does the National Archives
have on the people who purchased land in this manner? I would like very much
to request it. Is there a special form for that?

I am at an impasse in tracing my gggrandfather previous to this purchase.
Family stories are that he came into this country through New York from
Germany with a brother from whom he was separated and never saw again.
Gggrandfather KETTNER (KETNER) settled in Coleman County, TX sometime in the
late 1800s.

Any help you are able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Retreva

Hi Kittie,
I saw your message and thought I'd add my two cents worth. Because your
ancestor paid taxes on 160 acres plot, it may be that he bought the land from
the US government through the Land Patent process. You can get the files of
his purchases from the Bureau of Land Management. They have a website, which
another list member may have handy; I don't because my files are in another
city at the moment. Anyway, first you contact the BLM from the state of
Texas in order to search their index of Land Patents granted, by the name of
the purchaser. This document is free and then you send copies of it to the
National Archives to request the actual file on the purchase. You can glean
a variety of info from this file re: your ancestor. The files cost $10, if
they find them, nothing if they don't find them.

If you want, you can e-mail me privately and I can look up the contact info
when I'm back at my genealogy files, next week.
Good luck,
Liz
