Phyllis, you asked this same question on July 4, 2001, shortly after the
birth of our first grandchild. Here is a repeat of the message I sent then;
perhaps it didn't get to you. Marvin C. Nebgen

Marlene and I just became grandparents for the first time on Friday, Jun 29.
Only a few weeks ago, a tour group from German was here. We belong to the
Fredericksburg-Montebaur Sistersister Club and we usually host a dinner
social for them. We both speak fluent German and always enjoy these events.
Naturally, the impending birth of our grandchild came up and a German couple
responded, in German, that it was good that we were to become an "Opa and
Oma". We asked whether that was the common term in German and they said
that it was. Our children called our parents "Oma and Opa" but we thought
that it might just be a colloquialism in these parts. I had never looked
before, but my Random House German Dictionary shows this: Oma , -s, n.f.
granny, grandma - Opa, -s, n.m. grandpa. In the event that you are not
familiar with the German language, the n.f. and n.m. signifies that these
are a noun, feminine gender and noun, masculine gender, respectively.
There are also neuter gender nouns. Hence, I am "Der Opa" and my wife is
"Die Oma" of "Das Enkelkind"; grandchild is neuter gender. So much for the
language lesson, it gets even more complex when one gets in the formal terms
for grandfather, grandmother, grandparents, etc.
We have requested that our grandson call us "Opa and Oma".
