Subject: [G-T] Bernhard Cornelius FIRST voyage to the U.S.

I'm looking for information on Bernhard CORNELIUS first voyage (about 1884) to the United States.

I found the original ship manifest on the Ellis Island web site (www.ellisislandrecords.org) which records Bernhard's second voyage to the U.S. in 1895 (from Hamburg, Germany aboard the S.S. Dania) to Galveston with his new bride.

Bernhard's obituary includes a wealth of information..... a timeline that Bernhard "came to America in 1884 with his oldest brother, William. They landed in New York City but that same year they came to Indianola, Texas." The obituary tells of Bernhard's application for citizenship in February 1895, his return trip to Germany where he married Anna USBECK, and their return to the U.S. to make their home in Ezzell, Texas.

I know from the 1900 census (thanks to lookup volunteer Regina Williamson) that Bernhard and family were living with his brother William in Lavaca County. (The 1900 Census shows William and Helena married with no children after 14 years of marriage.) I have no additional information on William.

Where do I look for additional information on Bernhard's first voyage to the U.S. in 1884 or his trip back to Germany in 1895 (prior to his marriage)?

Madeline
