Hi Liz Hicks,
Thanks! I have three Germany-to-Texas immigrants I've been trying to find for
over 30 years. Here they are, as briefly as I thought I could make it:
Surnames:
BOLLING, BRAND, PETERS and, as their associates,
BAUER, DEPENBROCK, DUMESTRE, HAHL, HOFFMAN, LEGLER, RIPPE, SIMON, TOMFOHRDE
1. BRAND, Charles J., who was born 4/21/1859 probably in or near Chicago IL,
almost surely of German parentage, arrived in Houston TX around 1891 when he was
listed in the Houston City Directory as a bartender in the Texas House hotel,
married 2/22/1893 to Mrs. Mary SIMON BOLLING, had the following children: Emma,
Cecelia Trenetta, Sophie Gertrude, Elfrieda, Newton George and Stanley Gregory.
In 1893-1895, he owned and operated (with C. August DEPENBROCK) a grocery and
provisions store "Brand and Depenbrock" at the corner of Houston Avenue and
Summer Street in Houston. Subsequently, he worked in real estate, for a short
period in the firm C. W. HAHL & Company. Charles died on 12/30/1906 of gas
asphyxiation in his room in the home of Mrs. C. DUMESTRE, 1809 Franklin Avenue,
Houston.
2. PETERS, Trenatra/Trenetta, who was born in Germany in 2/1839, immigrated
1845 (neither ship, arrival port, nor accompanying adults known), married in
Brazoria County, TX as "Miss" Trenatra PETERS on 4/3/1856 to Gregory SIMON, a
native of Husseren-Wesserling, Alsace-Lorraine, and had the following children:
Edward, George, Albert, Mary, and Carl. In the 1880 Brazoria County Census, an
Albert RIPPE (born in Wechold, Germany and arrived in Brazoria County, Texas
prior to the 1850 Census) and his wife Dorah, ages 76 and 67 respectively, were
living in Gregory and Trenetta's home and listed as Trenetta's father and
mother. The connection between the PETERS and RIPPE surnames is not known.
3. BOLLING, Heinrich F., who was born about 1860 in either the kingdom or city
of Hannover, Germany and immigrated probably on the ship "Neckar", captain
HOFFMAN, embarkation: Bremen, debarkation: New York 8/15/1879. His first known
appearance in the U. S. is in the 1887-1888 Houston, TX City Directory where he
is listed as a clerk in the Texas House hotel owned by John TOMFOHRDE, also an
immigrant (immigration date unknown) and a friend of Heinrich/Henry's parents who
had remained in Hannover. Henry subsequently owned the Arlington Hotel, 341
Congress, and the Lone Star Hotel, 809-11 Prairie. He married Mary SIMON on
7/31/1889 and had one child named Charles Eugene. One of Henry's friends was a
Mr. Charles LEGLER of Trinity, TX. Henry sang with the Houston Saengerbund and
was also a member of these clubs: Magnolia Lodge #7, Sons of Hermann, the Houston
Schuetzenverein, Humboldt Lodge, the Knights of Honor, and the Retail Liquor
Dealers Association. Henry died 6/14/1892, age 32, in San Antonio, Tx, according
to a newspaper account, while walking with a San Antonio friend, John BAUER.
