The Stover grants are not in Madison Co., they are in Nelson and Augusta
counties directly south of the city of Waynesboro. the Sherando River flows
through the George Washington National Forest at the western foot of the
Blue Ridge Mtns. The little towns of Lyndhurst and Sherando sit alongside
the river. The bald mountain refereed to is now known as "Devil's Knob" and
is directly next to the Wintergreen Ski Resort which is atop Hamner's Mt.
(better known as Walton's Mt.) You can see the grants by traveling
westbound on I-64 from the Charlottesville area. Take the first Waynesboro
exit off of I-64 (you will have just descended the west slope of the Blue
Ridge). Turn left off the exit and follow the road through Lyndhurst and
follow the signs to Sherando Lake. Before the road curves sharply left and
begins it's ascent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will see the sign for the
entrance to Lake Sherando. The island is now in the middle of the lake.
The 100 souls that Stoever imported were Mennonites and their families are
still evident in the Mennonite settlements of Stuarts Draft and Fisherville
which abut the grants you are reading about.
Augusta and Nelson counties are beautiful areas to visit, especially if you
like to fly fish the Sherando and Shenandoah Rivers. While in Augusta Co.
you would enjoy the Museum of American Frontier Culture in Staunton. They
have an authentic village showing the three architectures that evolved into
the frontier style of housing.
There are very few Germanna families in the area, as most of the German
emigrants there moved in from Pennsylvania.
Wust's "The Virginia Germans" gives a good look at the German families of
the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Subject: Jacob Stover grants
A question regarding location of some Stover grants, and origins of
names:
There is a record for Jacob Stover, 5,000 acs. NL in St. Marks Par.
Spotsyl. Co. on W side of the Great Mountains, on the Sherando Riv.,
under the foot of the Great Mountains, at the foot of a naked mountain,
at the upper end of a Large Island in the Riv.; 15 Dec 1733, p. 127 for
divers good causes but especially for the Imp. of 100 persons to dwell
within our Colony of Virginia whose names are Jacob Miller... Jacob
Mire... Henry Sowder... Henry Hain... John Funk... Jacob Sowder.
Next is a similar grant Jacob Stover, 5,000 acs. NL in St. Marks Par.
Spotsyl. Co. on W side of the great Mountains, on the Second Fork of the
Sherrando Riv., above the mouth of Hawks Bill Cr., against a Small naked
Island in the Riv., over against a High round topd mountain; 15 Dec
1733, p. 129, for divers causes but especially for the Imp. of 100
persons whose names are Susannah Sowder... Jacob Calman... John Hear...
Jacob Funk... Martin Kindrick.
(Cavaliers and Pioneers, 1732-41, volume 4 on pages 22-24)
Are these locations in present Madison County, VA? Are the imported
people Germans [e.g., Miller = Mueller; Mire = Meier or Meyer]?
