<One of the favorite tales seems to be "finding the tombstone." The stories
vary, sometimes the cemetery is very large, sometimes it is the "wrong"
cemetery. The researcher enters the cemetery and is completely lost but he
walks without hesitation to the tombstone of his ancestor.>
I had this happen to me!! My mom, my Aunt and I went to OK a few years ago
to go to a family reunion. We also went so that my aunt could see he birth
father (she is my moms 1/2 sister, but don't ever say that to my mom!!) Well
we drove about 2 hours from where we were staying in McAlester, Pittsburg
Co. OK to Poteau, LeFlore Co., OK. When we get to Poteau we find out my aunt
didn't know where her birth father lived, she didn't even have his phone
number! We looked the number in the phone book, called, nobody home. So we
went driving around town. I was in the back seat going over papers I'd
copied the day before at the Pittsburg Co.Genealogical & Hostoryical
Society, when my mom calls out "Look a cemetery, bet Terry wants to look!"
This is the family joke, I love to wander in old cemeteries, some people
think thats strange? ;) I looked up to see the name of the cemetery, I was
so shocked to realized that I was holding in my hand a sheet I'd copied the
day before that listed members of my BROWN that were buried in that
cemetery!! I'm jumping around in the back seat yelling "STOP!!! I want to go
there!!" My mom and aunt thought I was just kidding so they had drove on,
but I'm looking back saying "Really, I want to go there, look" and handed up
the paper I had in my hand. We stopped for lunch and asked for directions to
the cemetery. When we found the cemetery, it wasn't huge but I'm sure there
were several hundred grave sites. How are going to find what were looking
for? It had statrted to rain and there was nobody to ask if there was a plot
map of any kind. So we drove around looking at the graves closest to the
roads, but I said I thought we needed to look for an older section as as the
graves I was looking for were from the late 1800's. I pointed out across the
grounds to an area that looked older and said "Lets try over there". It was
raining pretty hard now, so my aunt and I hopped out, umbrellas in hand, and
went to look. I walked up to the first stone and read the name, my heart
started to pound, it wasn't a BROWN but I had seen that name on my list from
the cemetery book! I went to the next stone and it was a BROWN! So was the
next and the next right on down the row!! I yelled "This is them!" My mom
and my aunt couldn't believe it!! How could we drive into a cemetery we had
never been to and drive almost right to the graves we were looking for!!
Very strange! My mom took a picture of my aunt and I standing in the rain
looking at those old grave site. I still get a strange feeling when I look
at that picture!!
Guess my BROWN family really wanted to be found. We never did find my aunts
birth father, guess she really didn't want him to be found :)
