Subject: [GERMANNA] Holtzclaw as Holictaw, Holtzeton, and Holsclan on the 1850 census

Hi List!
I don't know if anyone is searching for a Charles W(illiam?) Holtzclaw but I
was searching for Holtzclaw in the 1850 Va census on GenealogyLibrary.com
and ran across a Charles W. Holictaw on the index (I have a suscription and
the actual images of the 1850 census for some states is available there. I
have been trying to find a lead for my 2g-grandmother, Mary Lewis Holtzclaw
who married Robert Gordon Payne.) When I viewed the image, he could be a
Holtzclaw or Holzclaw instead.
Anyway, here is the info and I hope it helps a Holtzclaw researcher:
Ashby District of Fauquier County, enumerated by E. W. Anderson on the 30th
of Aug, 1850: Dwelling-House #392, Family #401: Charles W. Holztclaw, age
21, male, white, Farmer, born Va; Susan "Do" (indicating "ditto"), age 30,
female, white, born Va; Francis "Do", age 25, female (yes, it says female
with this spelling), white, born Va; Susan Carter, age 25, female, white,
born Va; Jno. "Do" (for Carter?), age 80, male, white, born Va; Mary "Do",
age 5, female, born Va; Elizabeth Miller (?, maybe Millen?), age 7, female,
white, born Va.
The dwelling enumerated previous to theirs was that of a Thornton Withers
and the one after theirs is that of Baby or Baly Connor (?) this is really
difficult to read - there are ink splotches....
Another Holtzclaw researcher sent me some info a good while back and it has
a Charles William Holtzclaw, son of Charles Holtzclaw and Clement Welch,
born in 1828...so about 21 in 1850!
Another incorrect one? I found a Francis Holsclan on the same census:
Enumerated on 2oth of Sept., 1850: Dwelling-house #578, family #598; Francis
Holsclan (looks like Holsclaw!), age 53, female, white, Farmer, value of
real estate $4000, born in Va; no one else in the household. The dwelling
enumerated before hers is that of Jno. Porter and the one after theirs is
that of Thomas Nelson.....
And one more....Wiliam A. or H. Holtzclaw (looks that way), bit on index as
Holtzeton: Enumerated the 31st of Oct., Dwelling #951, Family #969, age 27,
male, white, Manager, born Va; Jno. Hanback, age 55, male, white, laborer,
born Va.
