John uses the begin quote (“) and end quote (”) symbols in some of his
posts. These are not in the normal 7-bit ASCII character set. Some email
readers render them as solid blocks rather than quote marks (") - especially
if you are not using MS Windows.

Outlook and Outlook Express render them just fine. I'd guess that John uses
a word processor such as MS Word to composed his posts then pastes them into
his email program, retaining the higher order ASCII characters.

That's exactly what's happening. I just sent John an email that gives a
setting for the .ini file for his program, which fixes the "curly quotes".
