Subject: [GERMANNA] The 2 Michael Wilhoits

Dear Ann and other Wilhoit cousins;

There are really more Michael Wilhoits than the 2 I'm interested in. In my
genealogy data base I have the two plus a Johann Michael Wilhoit/Wilhite--a
grandfather, I think of the two Michaels (I don't have that data right before
me now.) The name Michael seemed to have been very popular with that
family!!! The sons of Johann Michael Wilhite all named a boy after their
father.

Here's what I have on these two Michael Wilhoit men:

My Michael Wilhoit--born ca 1749 Culpeper Co. VA--died after Dec. 1804 (he
signed a permission slip for his daughter, Nancy, to be married at that
time.) He was a son of Adam Wilhoit and Catherine Broyles. He married
Elizabeth Crisler about 1774/5.

His cousin (I believe they are cousins) Michael Wilhoit was the son of Tobias
Wilhoit and Catherine Walke. This Michael Wilhoit--born ca 1735 Orange Co.
VA--died about July 1804 (His will was proved July 16, 1804). He married a
woman named Mary Shirley or Mary Ballenger. There are a variety of surnames
for the Mary who married this Michael Wilhoit on RootsWeb's WorldConnect
project: Shirley, Shipley, Mary Hancock Shirley, and Ballenger of course.
This 2nd Michael is, I believe, the one in the DAR Patriot Index. I'd like to
know which Culpeper Class of the Militia he served in. Was it #54 or #71?

I feel that my Michael, being of an age to serve in the Revolution, must have
also served in the militia. I don't think a man would serve in 2 different
classes! I suspect they'd be in a class with their neighbors. Since Michael
and Elizabeth (Crisler) Wilhoit's daughter Nancy Wilhoit married John Finks,
the son of Mark Finks who was Captain of Class # 71-- I feel this is the
class my Michel Wilhoit served in. It makes sense. If I can, I'd like to
prove his service in the Revolution also and fill out a supplement on him. He
is not included in the Patriot Index now--but that publication does have some
mistakes in it too!

If you have time when you're at the DAR Library, I hope you'll check this
out. Maybe I can help some of you--have quite a few books on the Culpeper,
Rappahannock and Madison Counties plus Crozier's Spotsylvania County
Records. Thanks for any help you can give on this.

Sincerely,
Joyce Libes
