Hello Thom. Don't know if you're aware or not, but I'm the one who
started the VIRUS-DISCUSSION Mailing List at Rootsweb. Got too
busy and had to let someone else adopt it last year.
I've tried for years to convince every computer user to install an Anti
Virus (AV) program, whether it's McAfee, Norton, AVG, or any
other dependable AV program. I've also preached about keeping the
AV program up to date with the latest DAT files (at least once,
preferably twice, a week), and to configure it correctly.
You won't believe the number of people who just won't install an AV
program! And you won't believe the number of people who, once
they have a program installed, ignore it, not bothering to properly
configure it, or update it on a timely basis. They just go blithely on
their way, creating problems for others.
So, folks, once again let me "preach":
1) INSTALL AN ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM!!!!!
2) Configure it properly; that is, to check all your downloaded
email AND attachments.
3) Update it often. Hardly a week goes by that the AV program
producers don't provide a new DAT file. Sometimes, they
provide 2 or 3 a week!
And, all the users spreading viruses, trojans, worms, etc., are NOT
all "newbies". I've had arguments with people who have been using
computers longer than I have, who insist "they know how" to
manage their email and attachments without having to rely on an
AV program. NOT SO! As writers of computer infections become
more sophisticated in their "craft", there are more and more ways
to unintentionally infect your systems; and, there WILL come a time
when merely downloading an email, or visiting a web site, will infect
your system, unless you follow the 3 rules above.
As Thom says, "DUH...", it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure
out that being unprotected is like playing "Russian Roulette" -- you
going to get it sooner or later.
