Hi Sharon. I looked up the actual reference to which this home page refers,
Northern Neck Grants O, p. 265. Which is a grant to JAMES HURST, and yes it
does mention "Great Fork Mountain." Something I have never heard of before,
but the legal description does help place this--on Cedar Run, the Robinson
River, and adjacent to Col. Frogg and Richard Burdine.
This grant is dated 28 March 1770, for land described as follows:
To James Hurst of Culpeper County, 200 acres being "a certain tract of waste
and ungranted land in the said county bounded as by a survey thereof made by
Richard Young
A. Beginning at a chestnut oak on the south side of a branch of the GREAT
FORK MOUNTAIN and running thence down the said Branch East 128 poles to
B. a Spanish Oak and White Oak on the south side of the said branch a
conrer in a line of Col. John Frogg, then with Frogg's line NE 59 poles viz
20 poles crossing the branch and 39 poles further to
C. an xxx a spanish oak and a maple on the south side of the Robinson River
corner to Frogg, thence leaving Frogg's line up the said river North 192
poles to
D. 3 white oaks on the south side of the said river [cont?] on the side of
the FORK MOUNTAIN, thence up the several courses of the said River with
RICHARD BURDYNE'S line NW 28 poles crossing the mouth of CEDAR RUN
E. N58W 44 poles,
F. N10W 24 poles,
G. Nxxx 20 poles to
H. two white oaks on the South side of the River thence leaving Burdyne
West 80 poles to
I. two chestnut oaks and a poplar on the north side of the Cedar Run
Mountain among a heap of rocks and thence S730W 320 poles to
A. the beginning.
I must admit I have never heard of "Great Fork Mountain" but perhaps some of
these other boundaries will help place the location. Cedar Run and Richard
Burdine's land should be good markers to work from.
This also serves to point out that one should always look up the original
source to get the right answers. The Crown and Northern Neck land
patents/grants are on line at the Library of Virginia Web site.
Hope this helps,
Craig Kilby
