Subject: [GERMANNA] John Ashby and Catharine Hufman, again

Fauquier county deed book 8 at page 75 contains an agreement by Catharine
Hofman not to claim any rights to Capt. John Ashby's estate except one third
part of land and plantation and one third part of six named slaves. This
instrument is signed 3 Nov 1783 and recorded 24 Nov 1783. I found no
marriage return for this couple in the marriage records, not unusual. I
suspect this is a second marriage for Capt. John and wonder if Catharine was
a widow. I checked in Culpeper trying to determine Catharine's origins.
Henry Huffman who died before September, 1763, left land to a daughter,
Catharine, which she later conveys out in 1791, deed book R, page 46, as
Catharine Huffman, stating she had inherited it from her father, Henry. So
either the marriage never occurred or this is not the correct Catharine.
Henry's will, Book C, page 30, names the following heirs: sons: Tilman,
John, Henry, Joseph, Herman, son-in-law John Young who married my daughter
Elizabeth, daughter Catharine, beloved wife, Margaret, and daughters Mary,
Elizabeth, Alice, Elsibeth, Susanna and Eva. He names John Huffman and John
Young as Executors. signed 25 April 1767 witnessed by James Pendleton,
James (X)Blackwell and Charles Spilman. Recorded with the will is a
relinquishment by Tilman Huffman, as eldest son and heir of Henry Huffman,
to all rights as heir at law other than "what said will gives me". signed 6
Sept 1783 and witnessed by James Arnold and Henry Hufman. will and
relinquishment recorded 15 Sept 1783.
Culpeper will book O, page 133. will of John Hufman. names wife, Elizabeth,
sons Phelix, Edward, Thirnton and Alfred. signed 13 Feb 1837 witnessed by
George Spilman, Henry Huffman, Robert Hoffman and Wm. H. Mason recorded 20
Mar 1837. This Felix Huffman married Juliet Ann Green, grandaughter of
William Green of Culpeper, son of James Green and Elizabeth Tapp. The land
cited as Huffman land on the Little Fork map just went out of this family a
few years ago. I am not sure if Felix's father, John, is the son mentioned
in Henry's will or not.ttto be continued.
