One of the best reference books to have on Virginia history is A Hornbook
of Virginia History by Emily J. Salmon. It was published by the Virginia
State Library (now the Library of Virginia).
This book contains the following chapters which I find very helpful when I
am doing research: "The Counties of Virginia" - Listing all the counties
currently in Virginia, counties formerly in Virginia, Illinois County
formerly in Virginia, Pennsylvania Counties formerly in Virginia, Kentucky
Counties formerly in Virginia, and West Virginia Counties formerly in
Virginia. It gives all the counties, the year of establishment and the
counties from which it was formed. "Parishes of the Established Church of
Virginia, 1607-1785" - Listing both the County and the Parish in which it was
contained and the Parish and which County (ies) it incorporated. "The Cities
of Virginia" -- listing all the independent cities in Virginia, the year
incorporated and the counties from which formed. "Some Historic Places of
Worship in Virginia" "The Rivers of Virginia" and so on.
Hope this helps someone.
