Subject: [GERMANNA] Christopher Uhl or Yowell descendants
Date: Sun, 2 Feb 2003 15:26:38 EST
.....I'd like to try this again!
I appreciated the comments from John, Andreas and others...and the one
response I did receive privately from my posting to Germanna a few days ago.
Thank you! I never did find out who was the father of Nicholas Yowell (1712)
of Madison Co. Va.....father of Rebecca who married John Frey/Fray. Does
anyone know?
What I'm looking for is information on...descendant families...of the
children of Christopher Uhl or Yowell, later spelled...Yewell. He and his
sons are in the Germanna records.
My reason? I have a Thomas Youell (England) in my family thru my great
grandmother's mother and Christopher Uhl (Germany) in my family with direct
descent thru her father! I have discovered, down thru the generations, these
two families intermingled thru marriages and often the information on the
Uhl/Yowell family is mistakenly identified/connected with the Youell and
Ewell families. Different spellings of the name(s) include...Ewell,
Youel/Youell, Yowell, Yewell, Yowill, Ouell, etc. The information I've found
can be confusing and I was hoping someone had information on the Uhl
descendants.
My family descends, thru my g-g-grandfather, from Christopher Uhl/Yowell's
son,
John Yowell m. Mary Unknown...
who had a son, James Yowell m. Nancy Ann Shirley...
who had a son, Martin Yewell m. Nancy Foreman...
who had a son, Major Harrison Yewell m. Sarah Elizabeth Lewis...
who had a daughter, Linda Elizabeth Yewell m. Judge Horace M. Haskins, my
great grandparents.
Here's what I have on Christopher Uhl and his children which may or may not
be correct. I welcome corrections and additions!
.....Christopher Uhl (1679-1762) of Selzfeld, Baden, Wurttenburg, Germany
arrived with the Second Germanna group in 1717 and lived in Culpeper County,
Virginia.
Married: Eva Gottsaurin (1682-1754) of Germany and Margaret/Martha Unknown.
His children:
John Yowell (1755-1815) b.in Germany m. Mary Unknown..................my
line.
Magdalena Yowell (b: 1706) b. in
Germany.............................................???
Ann Catharina Yowell (b: 1708/09) b. in
Germany....................................???
Frederick "David" Yowell (1712-1770) b. in Germany m. Beverly Unknown
Anna Barbara Yowell (b: 1714) b. in
Germany.........................................???
James Yowell (1716/17-1777) b. in Germany m. Elizabeth Unknown
Christopher Yowell (1720-1750) b. in Culpeper County,
Va........................???
Rebecca Yowell(?) (1723-1791) b. in Culpeper County, Va. m. John Frey
Elizabeth Yowell (1725-1781) b. in Culpeper County, Va. m. Jacob
Broyles
Does anyone know what happened to these families...where they went, who were
their children, etc.?
.......and...does anyone think the Youel and Uhl/Yowell families are related?
The Youel descendants left Westmoreland, Va. with the rest of the colonists
who ventured into new lands. Could members of this family be mistaken for the
Uhl/Yowell's? Weren't there Christopher's in both families?
I'm adding this information from my files......please notice the last
sentence!
.......Note: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #3997, Date of Import: 21
Jan 2000]
Hague, VA., October 16, 1912 . . . . From where I am now sitting in my home a
gentle descending plain reaches for three miles to Nomini River, which makes
a graceful curve on each side of a bridge to which the road that intersects
the plain leads. On this ground Thomas Youell settled about 1630, and here
Captain Thomas Youell died in 1695. Captain Youell married a sister of his
neighbor, Dr. John Lee, and daughter of Richard Lee, the immigrant, of
Northumberland. Captain Youell's children were principally daughters, who
intermarried with the families of English, Watts, Spence and Atwell. Many of
their descendants are still here, and the name "Youell" as a Christian title
distinguished many of the descendants through several generations. No family
of Youell (Yowell) remained here as late as 1750 as far as I have seen. A
great tide of emigration early set in towards the mountains, and this family
doubtless followed it, locating in Culpeper. G. W. Beale.
Thanks again,
Joleen Haskins Patrick
