I believe that most researchers agree there are Buttons of English and
"German" origins. The German version may originate with a Butong of a
French derivation. I have published a note (by Frank Dake) on the possible
origins of the German Buttons. I gave this in one of the notes. (Do a
search on Dake in the notes.)
