Sorry, I read the 1853.

Interesting. There certainly were differences in the early 1800s. StL was a
town of only a thousand and the first steamboat, "Zebulon Pike," would not
make it up the river until 1817.

They almost certainly came down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh or many of
the other small towns south of there. This was still a dangerous trip
though. The Northwest Territories, esp. Ohio had active Indian warboat
raiders active on the river. Yours may have been in a flotilla.

The National Road (Baltimore to St. Louis) wouldn't be finished until the
1840s. However, there was a "Cairo to St. Louis Trail" (technically Cairo to
Illinoistown). So, my best guess is the Pennsylvania Highway (Pike) to
Pittsburgh, down the Ohio and up the Cairo StL Trail.
