Thank you Jayne, and my apologies for the delay in the thank you.
I've begun some preliminary lokups in military records, mostly using the
Pennsylvania Archives, so thanks for pointing me in that direction.

: There is a Maximilian Sekel in the 1880 census in Idaho. The age (25)
: seems about right. He is listed as a soldier/laborer at Coeur D'Alene
: Lake, Kootenai, ID. His birthplace is listed as Prussia. May want to
: check military records.
: -----Original Message-----
: I am hoping someone can help me out as I'm not sure where to look next.
: For
: the past several years, Max SEKEL has been my brickwall, but some bricks
:
: have been knocked away and progress is being made.
:
: Until today, when I located his marriage record, it had only been
: hearsay
: that Max was from Germany. Now it's confirmed:
:
: 26 April 1885 Max. J. SEKEL, occupied as a tailor, age 29, born in
: Germany,
: residing in Philadelphia, marries Mary E. FINNEGAN.
:
: Max is listed in Philadelphia's city directory for the first time in
: 1887,
: and he's residing at 2902 Alter. He is listed in the directories in
: 1890,
: 1892, 1893, and 1894 but then seems to disappear. I've not been able to
:
: locate his death record or find him on the census reports. Max is not
: listed on the 1900 census though his wife is listed as married; in 1920,
: his
: wife is widowed in the census. I've searched 1892 through 1895 and 1910
:
: through 1913 death indexes in Philadelphia, but the only Sekel found was
:
: Mary (his wife).
:
: Where would you look next? I have tried Ellis Island and Ancestry, but
: have
: not found a record of immigration or anything else on Max.
