Below is information about DNA TEST GROUP 5. This is the one group in the DNA project that has a participant with a confirmed tie to County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland. We are unsure of the original Ulster, Ireland locations of the other participants.

GROUP 5 -- 7 DNA KITS -- common ancestor not yet established.
Haplogroup R1b1 is the most common in European populations. Results posted at YSearch indicate that these kits might belong in haplogroup R1b1c7, indicating a possible relationship with the early Irish King "Niall of the Nine Hostages." SNP testing for these kits would provide an accurate haplogroup designation. Haplogroup R1b1c is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. Its branch R1b1c7 is primarily found in Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

The best resource for the family of JAMES GILLESPIE and wife JENNET can be found in “Brief History of the Family of William Gillespie, Sr. (1734-1826) son of James and Jennet” by Dorothy Day Gillespie written in 1988. “All information in this paper has been revised and corrected through 1987; based on the lengthy family history called “Genealogy – Commentary of William Gillespie, Sr. (1734-1826) and Some of His Descendants, 1740-1980” compiled by Dorothy Day Gillespie, in the process of writing since 1886, completion date unknown. Note: Dorothy Day Gillespie is the great-great-granddaughter of William Gillespie, Sr. and Isabella Houston Henderson.”

*Note from Gillespie DNA Project administrator – this 1988 version of the work of Dorothy D. Gillespie is the last printed version of her work that is available. Dorothy noted that even in this last version of her work, typo’s caused some incorrect information to be distributed.
