Caroline, Thanks for your comments. It might be worth pointing out however
that having acquired one house, your ancestor then had collateral with which
to borrow to buy others. Interest rates were fairly low (around 5%) and
could have been covered by rentals. It's all conjecture of course, but an
endowment policy maturing might have got him started. It's called
buy-to-let these days. Jeff
