Subject: Widows remarrying

There was an interesting thread about bigamy on the list a few weeks ago which set me thinking.
If a widow was remarrying, say in the 1880s in a register office in Cardiff, what proof would she have had to produce that she was in fact a widow? Death certificate of late husband, signed statement or would her say-so be enough?
