Hi
I'm researching my wife's family and have reached a dead end with her
maternal great grandmother MARY SMITH. The family legend was that she was a Native
American Indian and her daughter and grandchildren were definitely dark skinned.
I know now that MARY SMITH was born in Jamaica about 1856, her father was
WILLIAM SMITH. Mary married WILLIAM NEWBERRY in Cardiff in 1878, her father's
rank or profession was given as "gentleman" on her marriage certificate. WILLIAM
SMITH had died prior to 1878. MARY NEWBERRY (nee SMITH) died in 1891 giving
birth to a daughter, AGNES ALICE TENNANT, my wife's grandmother, in 1891 in
Cardiff. We are puzzled about Tennant used as a Christian name. She had previously
had at least two other children WILLIAM NEWBERRY and FREDERICK CHARLES
NEWBERRY. Mary is buried in Cathay Cemetery, Cardiff. If anyone has information
about SMITH or NEWBERRY in Cardiff I would be very grateful.

Regards
