Ahha - thank you Deric once again. I can 'hear' that pronunciation now.
Kind regards,
Jill

Hello Roy and Gaye,
Anna and I have a 'Juan' in our family too. It is perhaps Welsh for Joan?
Ours becomes Joan anyhow later.
Kind regards,
Jill

Gellideg is the correct Welsh spelling. "Celli" is a grove or small
wood. In the definite case the c changes to a g so "the grove" is "y
gelli". "Teg" or, after feminine nouns, "deg" means "fair" so
"Gellideg" is the Fair Grove. There is a Gellideg on the west bank of
the Taff in Merthyr Tydfil. I don't know if that is the only one in
Wales.
By the way, are you sure that your ancestor's name was "Juan". I know
it looks as if it is spelt that way in the 1861 census but that would
be an unusual name for a woman. In the 1851 census there is a Thomas
Jones of the right age in Gellideg living with a couple called Thomas
and Joan Jones and their daughter Margaret Jones and son-in-law
Daniell Jones.
