Would it be possible, does anyone know, if St Michaels Church, Gloucester,
would have the baptismal/birth records for 1812, and if not, where would I
be likely to find them?
Could someone please tell me the address of a group which specializes in
London births, as I am looking for a birth in Marylebone c.1838.
Many thanks,
Judy - (Sydney, Australia)

George,

This is right on the border with Oxfordshire!

In Glos you have the local villages of

Little Barrington
Windrush
Sherborne
Great Rissington

In Oxfordshire you have

Burford (the main market town of the area)
Taynton
Westwell
Fulbrook

My bets would go for Burford!

Cheers

Subject: ADMIN: Mailing list archives

Hi Everyone,

Rootsweb (the home of our list and many other genealogy-related
lists) is planning to put the mailing list archives on a web site.
The present method (using e-mail directives) will no longer be
available. We have the choice of participating or not. Reasons
for participating include the improved accessibility of information to
us and other researchers. Reasons for not participating include the
fact that the e-mail addresses of you who post messages to the list
will be accessible to those address-scrounging robots that collect
targets for sending out junk mail.

Unless I hear violent objections, I'll let Rootsweb go ahead and
make our archives public. This would happen on December 1.

************************************************************************
Please post any comments direct to myself rather than cluttering up the
list with them. Thanks
************************************************************************

If you want to see how the system will work, go to the URL
http://lists.rootsweb.com/~archiver/lists and poke around.

Cheers
Rod

Woah! I live here in Cinderford, and I certainly don't know of a
graveyard which has been built over by a block of flats. The railway
station area has been levelled and built over... perhaps that is the
origin of the "story".

The graveyards at Cinderford are:

St. John's Church
Cinderford Baptist Chapel

and there is a David BURFORD buried at the Chapel graveyard
in 1905 aged 76

This graveyard is *very* much still there ..... or at least it was a
couple of hours ago ;-) It's only 200 yards from where I sit.

I'll take a photo of the grave if you wish ;-)
(when the rain stops)

and... there have been several really good books published by Wild Swan
Press (Oxfordshire) about the railways in the Forest... with lots of
photos of Cinderford Station... I wouldn't be at *all* surprised if the
stationmaster isn't shown in some of them!

Cheers

Subject: Clutterbuck/Trotman names

Ah ha! The famous Clutterbucks and Trotmans! In the serendipitous way
of this list, you never know what's going to turn up. I've been doing
some research on the Berkeley area related to my family, the Archards or
Orchards, and have come across these names frequently. The information
below was gleaned from my notes. Check the sources for complete
records. .
Clutterbucks of various spellings are recorded in the Berkeley to Wotton
area as far back as I've researched - about 1200. The Trotmans were a
prosperous family in the same area. There are several listing for both
in Men at Arms for Glos. of 1608, especially in Hampton Meise.

Bigland's indexes show many monuments for both families in Berkeley,
Eastington, and Dursley. For Berkeley there are stones for
Clutterbuckes of Hinton from 1674-1733. Names include James, William,
Thomas, Edith, Esther, Fortune, and John. I haven't copied them all,
but do have a note from the same source, p.159 about "Hinton, Halmore,
and Breadstone, in which various eftates are poffeffed by the Families
of ...Clutterbuck..." and others. Yes, it is written this way. My
spell checker is going to blow up.

Many Trotmans listed for North Nibley and Wotton Under Edge.
Slimbridge records, 1679: Timothy and Elizabeth Trottman, witnesses.
Tymothy Orchard, Slimbridge, yeoman, married Grace Trotman in 1674.
Edward Trotman, Slymbridge, broadweaver, married Edith Taylor in 1637.
Edward Trotman, will proved 1664, Slimbridge
Men at Arms 1608 Richard Trotman -Slimbridge
John Trotman, gent, and Edward Trotman of the court, as well as others
- Cam

Records held at the GRO:
10566 "Copy letter of attorney appointing William Clutterbook of
Simbridge to doe and make sute and service in the name of Robert Hill,
archdeacon of Gloucester, in the hundred court of Berkely for the manor
of Gossington, 1 Aug. 1605"
10571 Names and holdings of tenants of Sir Richard Rivers in Hurst and
Slimbridge. The particulars follow a letter from Richard Trotman to
John Smyth of Nibley, 25 Sept. 1604.
10508 Agreement between Edward Trotman of Micheldean and John Smyth of
Nibley for the lease of land called Reilds otherwise Rylds, in
Slimbridge, 14 April 1613.
10502 Letter from Edward Trotman to John Smyth, of Nibley, concerning a
right of way through lands at Slimbridge, 18 April 1628.

I've found much useful material in the records of the Bristol and
Gloucestershire Archaelogical Society. These might be of interest to
other researchers, so I include them.
Marriage Allegations 1637-1680 v.2
Marriage Allegations 1681-1700 v.9
Calendar of Wills 1660-1800 v.34 and
Men and Arms for Gloucestershire in 1608 compiled by John Smith
Bigland's Indexes
Gloucestershire Wills 1541-1650 British Record Library v.12
Bristol Wills pre 1800 BRL v. 17
Also of interest and a great read is the rather large Extracts of
Smyth's Lives of the Berkeleys. He includes lineages of many of the
families in this area.

Sorry this is so long. I'd be glad to send details on sources to anyone
who's interested.

David-

I've seen quite a bit of material on the Jenners of Berkeley, including
a genealogy for your famous ancestor, Edward Jenner. I believe this was
printed in either Smyth's Lives of the Berkeleys or the Visitation of
Gloucester, 1682-3. If you don't have access to these, let me know and
I'll check it out on my next trip to the library.
Bigland's index of monument inscriptions also has some information,
including a note on p. 159 that the "principal and moft refectable
Families of Property fettled here are Raymond, Hickes, and Jenner."
Yes, I know it's really an "s" but it must be a special honor to be a
member of a moft refectable Family.
