Hi Julie

these are the James RUDGE which show up on the 1851 census at Birmingham

RUDGE, James Head <1815> Birmingham-WAR Birmingham
RUDGE, James BroL <1822> ----Hereford Birmingham
RUDGE, James SonL <1826> Birmingham-WAR Birmingham
RUDGE, James Vist <1837> Rio Janerro (British Subject)-South
America Ottery St Mary
RUDGE, James Son <1846> Birmingham-Warwicksh Birmingham
RUDGE, James SonL <1849> Nuneaton-WAR Nuneaton

on the basis that yours may be the one born in Hereford (call it
intuition!) I looked at that one more closely and the details look
extremely promising for you:

Name Rel Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
William WELCH Head M 44 M Bricklayer ----Hereford
Sarah WELCH Wife M 54 F --- ----Hereford
William WELCH Son - 11 M Errand Boy ----Hereford
James WELCH Son - 10 M Errand Boy ----Hereford
Emma WELCH Daur - 6 F Scholar ----Hereford
Elizabeth WELCH Daur - 2 F --- Birm-Warwicksh
Thomas RUDGE FatL W 67 M Builder & Plasterer ----

Census Place: Birmingham Birmingham, Warwickshire

so... there you have Thomas, a widower, and at least one of his sons,
James, and also what looks like Sarah RUDGE, a daughter of Thomas ;-)

And on the basis that we see the son born in Herefordshire, I also
looked for the other son Thomas... and find:

Name Rel Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
Thomas RUDGE Head M 41 M Fish Salesman Hereford-
Herefordsh
Mary RUDGE Wife M 46 F --- Hamily-Herefordsh
Thomas RUDGE Son U 17 M Porter Hereford-Herefordsh
Sarah RUDGE Daur - 9 F Scholar Birmingham-Warwicksh
Robert RUDGE Son - 9 M Scholar Birmingham-Warwicksh
James RUDGE Son - 5 M --- Birmingham-Warwicksh

Census Place: Birmingham Birmingham, Warwickshire
PRO Reference: HO/107/2054 Folio: 66 Page:

Don't you wish that they all would fall into place like this one ;-)

Next you need to do a search of the Gloucester parishes registers for
Thomas RUDGE baptised about 1784... which will show his parents.

Cheers
Rod
