June's question re the above arose out of some entries I extracted from the
burial register for Wotton (Congregational) burial ground in Gloucester in
the period 1850- 1862.

Common appears against most of the entries, private against a few. All have a
grave number.

I doubt if the communal or unhallowed theories are correct in the
circumstances. I suspect simply that common is used in this context for a
grave over which the family did not have exclusive rights, as opposed to a
private grave.
