We are desperately trying to SAVE an historic house from developers and seek
further information on the family.
Henry CARTER was a Surgeon (?) Dentist believed to have practised in
Cheltenham from c1830-1840. His son Ernest CARTER also a Surgeon (?)
Dentist, and believed to have been born in Cheltenham around the 1830
period.
Ernest Carter arrived in Australia in 1852 with his young bride and built a
beautiful home. We know nothing of his English origins and would be most
grateful for some assistance. Directories have the family living in London
by 1851. Unfortunately Ernest Carter died whilst on a visit to London in
1889 and you'll all know the English death certificates tell us nothing of
their family......... hence the difficulty! The name of Ernest Carter's
home is SHRUBLANDS if that means anything to the Cheltenham area. As well
as being the second dentist to practise in Melbourne, he was also a vigneron
and was winning awards for his wines by 1867 under the label: Shrublands
Vineyard, Boroondara. But it's the English heritage we need!!
