A number of fellow-listers helped me find the first marriage of my ancestor
William HOLLAND to Elizabeth PHELPS at Rudford in 1834 and this is now
confirmed, thanks to a birth certificate for one of their children.

Elizabeth died in 1842 and was buried at Churcham. The age given by the NBI,
39, matches the 1803 Rudford baptism date for her which some listers gave
me. Her parents were Edward and Elizabeth. They probably married in 1794,
Edward PHELPS and Elizabeth HATTON, and the first child was born later the
same year.

So far, so good.

However William HOLLAND remarried in 1843 at Churchdown. His bride was ...
Elizabeth PHELPS!
This one was baptised in 1823, daughter of John PHELPS, butcher, and
Elizabeth, of Cheltenham. They married in Cheltenham in 1820. She was
Elizabeth HILL. I haven't found baptisms for either in Cheltenham.

It occurred to me that the two Elizabeths could have been members of the
same family, possibly aunt and niece or cousins, and that tracing No 1 could
lead me to the origins of John PHELPS. (HILL is a story for another time,
and there seems to be a link to Bisley.)

If anyone is researching PHELPS and can shed any light on the above I would
be glad to hear from them.

Regards

David
