Subject: [GLSHIPS] International Shipmasters Assoc.
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 10:11:23 -0400
I wanted to let you all know that I have found three early copies of the International
Shipmasters Assoc. Directories which originated on the Great Lakes in 188? This is
an benevolent society that was started to help take care of widows and orphans of
Shipmasters who had died. I am ordering today. The directories I am ordering are for
the years 1911, 1915, and 1922. I should get them in about a week.
I would like to put the names etc. into a database we could use on the website. If
anyone has any of the MS database (Exel, Access or can create tables) programs
and would be willing to put info. in please let me know and I will make copies of pages
when the books are received to send to you with credit to you on the webpages for
your hard work.
I have a 1966 edition right now which is under copyright so I can't post to the webpage,
but can do lookups as this contains a list of all members who have died since the
organization began. The list gives names only without years, places or ship names.
The thing it could do is verify if your ancestor was a shipmaster.
If anyone is looking for someone sailing in 1966 it does contain a list of shipmasters
belonging with home addresses.
Please be advised that not every shipmaster necessarily belonged to this association.
But it is a good starting point.
Thank all.~ Pat
