I, too, was dismayed to lose Proquest and HQ. But then, I was told that the
Tucson/Pima County Public Library had it and it was available for use from
home.
Imagine my frustration and disgust to learn that they had offered only a
miniscule collection compared to the Godfrey had.
Offered through NewsBank, not Proquest are:
The NY Times: only from Jan 2000-present
No historical LA Times, Washington Post, or Chicago Tribune
etc... (In fact, no current LA Times or Washington Post!)
However, NewsBank does offer a slew of smaller local publications but none
go back further than 1985, 98% start with 2000.
They even have Canadian, Latin American, British, and some European
papers.... but again, all are recent. I doubt if the majority of them
would be of use to the genealogist.
If anyone knows of an Arizona connection to the historical papers offered by
Proquest, please post it.
They do offer the HQ Census, though.
