Message Board Post:

Sandor,

When did your family members leave Stryj?

In my family, William Guthartz deserted the Russian Army in about 1904 or 1905. William, a very small man, was a tailor and he made many of the officers' uniforms. He was well liked by the officers. His lieutenant told him one evening that there was a big battle coming up the next day. He said that the Jews would be put at the front of the line and because William was not much of a soldier, he would surely die. He told him to leave. William deserted, obtained some money from his mother, and fled the country.
