I have received two replies to my earlier posting pointing out that Veryl GOODNIGHT could not have been a direct descendant to Colonel Charles GOODNIGHT because Colonel Charles GOODNIGHT had no biological children. Does anyone know Veryl's exact lineage?
The following site makes the following distinction between lineal (direct) and collateral descendants: http://www.duhaime.org/diction.htm .
"Lineal descendant -- A person who is a direct descendant such as a child to his or her parent."
"Collateral descendant -- A descendant that is not direct, such as a niece or a cousin."
Similar definitions can also be found at the following sites:

As seen at the following site, the word "descendant" can even include adopted individuals:

Subject: Veryl GOODNIGHT sculpture at George BUSH Presidential Library
While visiting the George BUSH Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas, this morning, I was surprised to find that the large bronze sculpture located in the central courtyard of the library was done by a GOODNIGHT. The sculpture, titled "The Day The Wall Came Down", is one of two identical sculptures cast by Sante Fe, NM, artist Veryl GOODNIGHT. According to the following site, Veryl is a descendant of Colonel Charles GOODNIGHT, the legendary Texas cattle baron: http://www.aaea.net/goodnight.html .
The same site says, "Her largest work to date, The Day The Wall Came Down, a monument to freedom, portrays five over life size horses jumping over the rubble of the collapsed Berlin Wall. There are two castings of this monument, one located at the George Bush Presidential Library and the 'sister' casting is on display at the Allied Museum in Berlin, Germany. Each sculpture is 30 feet long, 18 feet wide and 12 feet high and weighs approximately 7 tons."
Further information about these sculptures can be found at the following site: http://www.verylgoodnight.com/wall.html . According to that site, "There are two sister castings of the 1 1/4 life size bronze monumental sculpture, 'The Day the Wall Came Down.' The monument's composition is five horses, one stallion and four mares, running through the rubble of the collapsed Berlin Wall. One casting was placed in a reunited and free Berlin on July 2, 1998. Delivered by the U. S. Air Force on the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, installed by the German Army, and unveiled by former U. S. President George Bush. The sculpture is a gift of friendship from the American people to the people of Germany. The second or 'American' casting is permanently displayed in the central courtyard of the George Bush Presidential Library, adjacent to the campus of Texas A&M University. This second casting was first placed on loan to the state of Georgia for the 1996 Olympic Games and then mo!
ved to the new Presidential Library when it opened in the fall of 1997"
A photo of the sculpture at the George BUSH Presidential Library can be viewed at the following site: http://bush.tamu.edu/about_the_school/tour/horse.html . A photo of Veryl GOODNIGHT with President BUSH can be found at the following site: http://www.verylgoodnight.com/gallery/wallgallery/12verylgeorge.html .
