Hi All

Those of you who like me are struggling to get the references to your
registered surnames from the 1851 census may wish to know about the
following index (although it is advertised in Family Tree Magazine).

I have just received an extremely useful listing from Ray Friend's
Worcestershire index. This provided 44 Marsdens, two of the families
solving riddles for members of my one-name group.

Ray makes a very modest charge for the data (2.50 sterling for each 100
persons or part thereof) and can supply them via e-mail (though you may
need to be proficient in decoding MIME files).

If you want to contact him for more details, his address is:

I am attaching details of his service below, these (importantly) include
the pieces and places covered.

Introduction
This indexing project started in 1988. The index for the county has now
been completed, and stands at 286,736 records for individuals who were 'in
County' on the night of 30th March 1851.

This file gives a brief overview of how I may be able to assist you in
finding your lost ancestors. There is also a list of the piece numbers
included in the index, and an outline of places covered by those pieces.

There is a separate record for every individual in the index. Each record
contains all the information given in the original documents.
Presentation is in single line format, as follows:
Surname, Forename, male age, female age, occupation, notes, birth county,
birth place, P.R.O. piece number, enumeration district, folio number,
schedule number, address.

There are additional codes, e.g. the order of entry for each member of a
household, and a further number denoting household size. to enable clients
to re-assemble households, and to check if they are complete.

Not every place in Worcestershire is included in the index. Some parishes
on the county boundaries although geographically in this county were
members of the Poor Law Unions of adjacent counties. The census was
enumerated on a basis of these Unions. The largest area not covered is
Inkberrow and Feckenham. They were administratively in Warwickshire, and
the Registration district of Alcester.

There are two principal ways in which I may be able to assist in your
search.

1. If all the information you have is a single forename/ surname
combination, I can extract from the master all the entries for that name,
presented as an alphabetised listing. The four digit piece number given
with each entry links to the listing given in this file, thus identifying
the relevant piece number. For example 2032 = HO 107 2032.

2. I can search for specific family groups. If you supply extra
information, e.g. the forename(s) of a spouse, parent or child, an
approximate age, or an occupation or birth place it will assist me in
extracting entire family groups for you, and their complete households. In
which case they will be presented in transcript format. The parish, town
or village etc. where the family were located will be noted.

A leaflet explaining all the codes is sent with the first extract, after
that it is not needed as it is a very simple system.

When a specific family group has been sought, and located, the report will
be in the original transcript format. The complete household structure and
the Registration Districts and the name of the Parish will be given. This
is useful if you wish to know which Parish a specific address was in so
that you may link it to Registration information.

Some of the common names are represented in large quantities.
For example, there are in excess of 5,400 SMITHS, and more than 350 of
these are John. Similar large numbers apply to some of the other names
common to the area.

Cost for a name search and printout
Depends on the type of search my client wants.
1. For a simple surname search and alphabetical listing of up to 100
persons, with all census data - £2.50 - please specify "surname listing".
2. For the search for a specific person, or family group, the fee is -
£2.50.(2.5 UK pounds). Hence if several separate families are sought the
fee applies for each family.

If I cannot be reasonably certain that a correct identification has been
made a listing will be provided giving all the examples which are to be
found in the index for that surname. In the case of the very common names
all the examples of the specified surname/ forename combination will be
provided.

Fees include return first-class postage. If you do not enjoy typing - or
want your data quickly e-mail is available, ask for this service when you
order, and give me your address.

If there are other questions you wish to ask, or if you require a special
index, e.g. occupational, or other special interest please get in touch
with me.

Entire pieces are available only on microfiche, and by piece nuber.

I will include up to three variants in a single search, this being covered
by the fee mentioned. If you do not specify variants the search may fail as
I do not make random searches. To qualify as a single search the variants
should be given as in the following example: Wilcocks/ Willcocks/ Wilcox,
Thomas, (followed by any other information available). If there are more
than three variants, and you wish to have them all searched each batch of
three variants will cost an additional £2.50.

If you obtain an index extract for a specific surnanme, and find lodgers,
servants which are relevant to your study, and you require details of the
full household, household extracts can be obtained by quoting the relevant
reference numbers of an inidividual. Cost is £1.50 per household. Post
paid.

It will be appreciated that the index files are very large, hence the
address is entered only into the record of the Head of a household, and
persons in public institutions. Where family groups have been found this is
not a problem, as you do not want the address replicated for each
individual.

Important note:
Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the listings, and
indexes, it has to be said that nobody is 'error-proof If any errors are
found in my work, it would be greatly appreciated if clients would please
inform me so that amendments may be made to the database.

It should be understood however, that the indexes were designed primarily
as an aid to finding the data quickly and efficiently in the original
documents. They will enable you to find entries in minutes rather than
searching through, perhaps two or three microfilms in search of a single
entry.
They were not intended to be 'stand-alone' documents and should not
therefore be regarded as definitive works.

Electoral data
I have Electoral data, for the City of Worcester only, for the
Parliamentary elections in the years 1835 1841, 1847, 1852, 1857 and
1865 and the
Electoral Register 1839 for Worcester City

The Poll Books for these years have been indexed, and merged into a single
index. The format is single line entries, surname, forenames, address,
electoral qualification, votes cast, and electoral booth number. The
listing is alphabetical by surnames and forenames. In some years, extra
information is given --- for example those electors who did not vote, or
electors who had died since the last register of electors was published.
Thus the pattern of voting, and indeed addresses, for an individual can be
traced over a series of elections.

The Index to the Polls is available on microfiche. The set is of 5 Fiche
and costs £4.75 including postage.

Payment (payable to A. F. Friend) with search requests please to address
given above.
