In New Zealand I'd recommend the New Zealand Society of Genealogists
Family Research Centre (aka NZSG Library) in Auckland: lots of books, CDs
fiche of BMD registrations, school roll indexes etc. Non-members can use
it for a day fee of NZ$15. If you can go on a Wednesday it is open 10-8:
I went with a long time ONS correspondent who is a member of NZSG and we
worked non-stop nearly all day. It was very profitable for tracing my
Millard cousins, and doing some basic checks that there aren't any
Bodimeades recorded in New Zealand under that name.
Details at:

If you know that you have interests in a particular area then a local
museum might be of help.

lists them. I found a lot in the Nelson Region museum at Stoke, which is
close to where my 3x-great-uncles settled. There is also an archives
gateway at
http://marvin.otago.ac.nz/gateways/index.htm
which might help you. The national archives are in several major cities
http://www.archives.govt.nz/
but I didn't get to use them. I also found the Auckland City Library had
a good newspaper collection. I found a lot of information about relevant
places to visit on the web before I went, so it is worth doing quite a bit
of planning.
