Subject: More GORDONs in New Hampshire
I have been hunting GORDONs in New Hampshire:
ROBER T GORDON : On /Feb 27, 1741 he appeared in Chester NH as head of
household in a tax list . Source: History of Old Chester, NH by Chase,
published in 1869, p. 260. On page 314 iin an article about the medical staff
of the town there was a paragraph about midwives. Midwives bore the
appelation of "Granny." "Likewise Mary, the wife of ROBERT GORDON and mother
of David WHITE's wife, who died about 1795 at a very advanced age" held that
title. Later on Mary is listed as over ninety when she died. She had lived
with her daughter MARY GORDON WHITE.
On page 367 it mentions that in 1755 ROBERT GORDON was " in an expedition
against the French Forts DuQuense, Niagara, and Crown Point in the winter of
1755.N.H. furnished regiment of 600 men under Colonel Joseph Blanchard in
which the following Chester names appear" with R.G. one of the names listed.
ROBERT GORDON is again mentioned specifically as being in the expedition
against Crown Point.
On page 534 is the GORDON Family Genealogy which consisted of one para as
follows.Caps are mine.
" ROBERT GORDON lived on H.L. 36 on the homestead of JOHN CALFE. Mr. Calfe
reserved his lot when he sold in 1745. DAVID WHITE married a daughter and
the mother lived with them. She was famous for the manufacture of fine Linen
and was probably a midwife as she bore the appellation of 'Granny GORDON'.
She died about 1795, a. over 90.
There was another ROBERT GORDON who lived above Head's Tavern in
Hooksett at a later day."
Question: Where is Hooksett? Any chance that some enterprising soul wrote
the memoirs of a year at Head's Tavern. It is possible that the second
ROBERT GORDON was my gggrandfather.
Found lots more GORDONs in cenetery inscriptions for assorted towns. Will
put it in later E-mail.
